Atherton has been associated with coal mining since the 14th century. During the last century the town was famous for its collieries, cotton mills and iron works, Atherton’s last coal mine closed in 1966 and the last working cotton mills closed in 1999. Due to the significance of Atherton during the industrial revolution, houses were built to accommodate the manual workers. Many of the brick built terrace houses still remain and provide good solid homes. Newbrook Road and the surrounding residential areas have a reputation for more ‘high end’ expensive properties.
Atherton has a wealth of local shops schools and transport links. There are many good schools and public facilities. Some of the more popular primary schools are St Philips Church Of England, Parklee Community Primary and Chowbent Primary School. Fred Longworth is the main high school.
