About Ramsbottom Bury

Located on the hillside approximately 13 miles north of Manchester City Centre, and 4 miles north of Bury Town Centre is the town of Ramsbottom, in the BL0 postcode and covered by Bury Metropolitan Borough.

Ramsbottom has a past of industrialisation dating as far back as the 19thCentury. With the demand for local housing increasing as the mills grew, large numbers of red brick terraced properties were built on the northern side of what we now call Bolton Road West. On the south side of Bolton Road West are several residential estates built in the majority since the Second World War – a drive down Nuttall Lane will bring you to a highly desirable area of modern detached, semi detached and townhouses set in curved drives and cul-de-sacs.

A number of primary schools are in the area, most notably Summerseat Methodist Primary and Hazlehurst County Primary.  Woodhey High School provides education for the 11-16 year olds of the area.

With good transport links to Manchester and Lancashire provided by the M66 commuting is easy.  Walmersley Road and Brandlesholme Road provide road access to Bury and surrounding areas by car or by the frequent buses.

Ramsbottom is very well provided for in terms of community facilities and things to do. The local cricket team has a wonderful ground set to the background of the East Lancashire Railway station, and the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium provides local football team Ramsbottom United a home. The aforementioned East Lancashire Railway is a very popular tourist attraction, running from Bury to Rossendale, with a stop at Ramsbottom inbetween. Sadly this is not a commuter route, but the historic steam trains run regularly and serve as a reminder of the area’s industrial heritage. Also visible from the majority of the town is Peel Tower, standing atop Holcombe Moor. A landmark and reference point that all locals appreciate on a personal level, walkers from all around Lancashire come to stand at the foot of the tower and take in the views over West Yorkshire, East Lancashire and as far afield as Blackpool Tower on a clearer day.

There are also a good range of entertainment facilities, mostly on Bolton Road West, particularly in the town centre, with bars and restaurants providing the area with nightlife. Ramsbottom Festival has been a very popular music festival over recent years, growing in stature and attracting a high standard of artists such as Idlewild and The Proclaimers.  In Bury, there is also a fantastic italian restaurant in Al Bosco.
