The town also offers superb retail and leisure facilities, schools and sixth form colleges helping support its expanding population. The River Irwell flows through the town and this position has proved important in its history and development. The river effectively divides the town into two parts flowing from north to south passing through some picturesque countryside. Bury is extremely well connected with excellent transport links including the metrolink with access to Manchester, Media City, Manchester airport and neighbouring towns. Cardwells are able to advise on all aspects of the property market in Bury and we are a well known Letting Agent in the town.

Historically part of Lancashire, Bury emerged in the industrial revolution as a mill town manufacturing textiles and is twinned with Angouleme, France. Bury resident Sir Robert Peel was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and founded the Metropolitan Police Service and Conservative Party. The Peel memorial is outside Bury Parish Church and the Peel Monument stands on Holcombe Hill overlooking Ramsbottom and Bury. The town was formed around the ancient marketplace but even prior to this there is evidence of activity dating back to the period of roman occupation.

There is a tremendous mix of property in the BL8 district, ranging from brand new detached family homes and pre war semis to period homes and apartments. Cardwells let and manage all types of property in Bury at all times of the year, so if you are looking for a Letting Agent in Bury then choose Cardwells.

SIGNIFICANT AREAS IN THE POSTCODE

Brandlesholme, Bury

One of Bury’s several suburbs, Brandlesholme lies approximately 3 miles north of Bury town centre and 12 miles north of Manchester city centre.  It’s most notable public facility is Burrs Country Park, home to a lovely little cafe and an excellent array of sculptures by some prominent artists such as David Kemp. There are also a number of playgrounds for the entertainment of children – and grown up kids too! Another highly popular attraction for families is the Wild Bird Sanctuary.

There are residential estates now either side of Brandlesholme Road, contrasting the period semi-detached that line the main road with large and numerous detached and semi-detached homes, in a variety of ages from post-war to 1990’s estates, often with winding streets and ample plots.

Greenmount, Bury

One of the best regarded areas in Bury and among the most desirable is the village of Greenmount, which is recognised by locals as part of Tottington. Manchester city centre is 13 miles to the south, and Bury town centre is only 4 miles, also to the south. Greenmount was first established as an area of the village of Tottington in the 17th century, however the growth of Bury in general and specifically Tottington and the popularity of Greenmount meant that eventually Greenmount was considered a village in its own right.

The area today has all the things that you would expect of a village, along with a range of property types and styles. Much of the first settlement of Greenmount was in cottages gathered around the existing main roads that we know today as Holcombe Road and Brandlesholme Road.

Through the early to mid 20th Century the period semis which are more common rose up in the area, but due to low population density the houses were built larger and in larger plots, creating homes that today are more desirable and spacious than many of the typical semi-detached properties. Today, the sites of some of the older parts of Greenmount are slowly being converted for the sites used to develop homes.

Tottington, Bury

Tottington is a small, semi-rural town located between Bury to the south and Ramsbottom to the north, on the edge of the West Pennine Moors and approximately 10 miles to the north of Manchester city centre. Historically the town was part of the Duchy of Lancaster, before the Duke of Lancaster took the throne, making Tottington a ‘Royal Town’ and the Manor of Tottington along with it.

More recently, the area is known more for its industrial roots producing a number of different textiles between 1891 and 1980 providing some wealth to the area and attracting a larger population. This slightly eclectic history has provided Tottington with a wide range of property types and styles, from the stone and red brick built terraces and cottages provided for the millers in the Industrial Revolution, to the period semi detached properties that were the result of increased population and wealth and now to the modern semi detached and detached homes that we see being built to accommodate those still arriving at a very popular area.

Cardwells consistently have a good stock level of all variety of properties in Tottington and have worked hard to bring our Bury town centre branch on Market Street to the strength that can be seen today, continuing to develop the property market presence we have in Tottington and throughout Bury.

Walshaw, Bury

Located to the north west of, and approximately 2 miles away from Bury and approximately 14 miles north of Manchester is Walshaw. Walshaw is not by any means steeped in a rich and full history – like most villages, it has references to days gone by in the form of Christ Church and its grounds and the Memorial Cross that stands on the island at the junction of High Street and Walshaw Road.

The recent swing in preference of buyers to live in semi-rural areas that have been experienced in the 20th – 21st centuries has influenced Walshaw to turn from a hamlet on the outskirts of Bury, into a peaceful village enjoying excellent schools and new stone-built detached homes combined with the more quaint stone cottages of old.

The area is served primarily by one primary school in Christ Church which is linked to the Anglican Church nearby. There are other primary schools in surrounding areas including Lowercroft Primary.

There are no secondary schools within Walshaw but Tottington High School and Elton High School are both within 1 mile and 0.5 miles respectively.

Walshaw is also served by very strong transport links. Despite the nearest motorway being the M66 on the opposite side of Bury, travel is made much easier by effective A-road links to Bury, Bolton and surrounding areas, plus the metrolink is available from Bury Interchange into Manchester city centre. Past clients living in Walshaw have found Bury Interchange to be a comfortable walk away, rather than using the bus service, which is also more than adequate for getting about Bury.
