Peel Tower

Peel Tower is a historic tower located in the town of Bury, in Greater Manchester, England. It stands on Holcombe Hill, which is part of the West Pennine Moors and offers stunning views over the surrounding countryside. The tower was built in 1852 to commemorate the life and achievements of Sir Robert Peel, who was a British statesman and Prime Minister in the 19th century.

Sir Robert Peel was born in Bury in 1788 and went on to become one of the most important figures in British politics of the 19th century. He is perhaps best known for founding the modern police force, which is why police officers are often referred to as “Bobbies” in the UK. Peel also served as Prime Minister twice, from 1834 to 1835 and from 1841 to 1846.

We at Cardwells, Estate Agents Bury are reminded every day of Sir Robert Peel, as his memorial statue is clearly visible from our office in the town.

The construction of Peel Tower was funded by public subscription, and it was designed by the architect Richard Lane. The tower stands 128 feet tall and is constructed from local stone. It has four floors, each with a circular room, and a spiral staircase leads to the top of the tower. The tower is topped with a viewing platform, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Peel Tower has become a popular destination for visitors to Bury and the surrounding area. It is a Grade II listed building and is open to the public during the summer months. Visitors can climb to the top of the tower and enjoy the stunning views, as well as learn more about the life and achievements of Sir Robert Peel. The tower is also a popular spot for hikers and walkers, as it is located on several popular walking routes in the area, routes often enjoyed by members of the team at Cardwells, Lettings Agent Bury.

Overall, Peel Tower is a significant landmark in Bury and an important piece of British history. Its construction was a testament to the admiration and respect that the people of Bury had for Sir Robert Peel, and it continues to be a popular destination for visitors to the area today.
