Blackrod (BL6) is classed as a civil parish of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, It sits just over 3 miles from Wigan and 6 miles from Bolton. Historically the name Blackrod comes from old English ‘Bleuc Rodu’ meaning ‘dark clearing’ and was predominantly an old coal mining settlement. Blackrod sits on an old Roman Settlement and also has an old bleachworks, mills and printing works to its rich past. Blackrod is situated on hilly ground near the River Douglas, west of the West Pennine Moors, It lies west of the M61 motorway, which divides it from Horwich. In the west is Arley, now the site of a golf course and to the south is Scot Lane.

Lostock is regarded as one of Bolton’s premier residential areas.  Lostock is 3 miles to the west of Bolton town centre and 18 miles from Manchester.  The neighbouring residential areas are Markland Hill, Heaton, Ladybridge and Horwich / Middlebrook.  Lostock is part of the postcode prefix area BL6 and forms part of the Bolton Council local governance area.

There are some wonderful facilities in Lostock for every age group, but one of the key attractions is the fantastic transport links.  There is Lostock train station which serves Bolton, Manchester, Preston and beyond.  There are excellent car parking facilities at the train station, so some will park at the station and then use the train to commute.  Lostock is well served by the road network with both junctions 5 and 6 of the M61 within easy reach.  From the M61, the M60, M65, & M6 can all be reached.  It is unusual for any part of Bolton to be so well served by the motorway network that there is a choice of two motorway junctions and access via St Peter’s Way.

There is a wonderful selection of leisure and recreational facilities in Lostock including the choice of Golf Clubs, Lostock Tennis Club plus Bolton Arena which offers a wonderful scope of sports facilities including tennis, football, gymnasium and sports parties. There is also a wonderful selection of restaurants and shops including national chains at Middlebrook and the independent businesses.  There are various baby and mother groups, parks and wonderful facilities for children throughout Lostock.
