RESIDENTIAL AREAS OF M26
Radcliffe
Radcliffe is a town which forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury and which sits nestled between Bury, Bolton and Whitefield. The town has been settled for a significant amount of time as there is evidence of Mesolithic Norman and Roman activity in the area. Known previously as “Redeclive” the town appears in the Domesday Book and was at one time centred on the Church Of St Mary which is now a Grade I listed building. Cardwells have been selling houses in Radcliffe and renting houses in Radcliffe since 1982.
The most significant period of growth for Radcliffe, like many towns in the north of England was during the industrial revolution and the mining era. Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal ran directly through Radcliffe linking the mills of the region and today the same canal is generally disused, except as a focal point in the respective towns harking back to the town’s most significant period. Otherwise, the few remaining cotton mills in Radcliffe are used as offices and a small amount of residential accommodation.
Being a comparatively new town (relative to, for example, Ainsworth) Radcliffe’s homes are mostly dating early 1900s or thereafter. Typically for a mill town, the grid-iron streets are prominent when travelling around Radcliffe, but beyond these zones you will find a variety of modern, some ’70’s, some 90’s and some more recent developments, where the town has evolved to pander to wealthier residents and keep up with neighbouring areas, particularly Whitefield and Bury.
Primary schools in Radcliffe include Radcliffe Primary, St Mary’s RC Primary, and Gorsefield Primary. Radcliffe does rely heavily on surrounding areas for secondary education however. There are several reputable high schools in neighbouring Bury, Whitefield and Little Lever such as Derby High School in Bury, Elms Bank High School in Whitefield and Little Lever Secondary School.
Radcliffe has lots of places to eat and drink in the town, amongst the most popular is the excellent Mediterranean restaurant Italia Mia, the top rated Asian cuisine offered by Armaan Exquisite Indian and if you just want a cake and a tea then Irwells Bistro is for you.
Radcliffe also has excellent transport links throughout Greater Manchester. Many commuters choose to use Radcliffe metrolink station (less than a 10 minute drive from most of Radcliffe) to commute into Manchester City Centre, whilst Bury and Whitefield metrolink stations are within about 5 miles. The nearby M60 provides access to the wider areas of Manchester and the motorway network beyond. Main roads take you directly to Whitefield, Bury and Bolton whilst Bury Old Road via Whitefield and Prestwich leads into Manchester too.
Being a town in its own right, the residents of Radcliffe benefit from a good array of leisure facilities and communal amenities. Radcliffe has its own leisure centre with swimming facilities and gym and a town centre with a wide array of retailers, both chain stores and independent stores. There are large supermarkets, popular restaurants and pubs such as the Sparking Clog on Radcliffe Moor Road and the redeveloped canal side is a lovely place to walk.
Radcliffe Borough Football Club is the principal sports club in the town, playing at the Belvoir Stadium. Radcliffe Cricket Club is just down the road along with Radcliffe Junior FC. Radcliffe Borough FC also has sports facilities for public use such as 6-a-side pitches.
