About Atherton
Atherton has been associated with coal mining and nail manufacture since the 14th century due to the abundance of coal which was located within the close proximity. During the last century, the town was famous for its collieries, cotton mills and ironworks, Atherton’s last coal mine closed in 1966, and the last working cotton mills closed in 1999.
Due to the significance of Atherton during the industrial revolution, houses were built to accommodate the manual workers.
