Smithills, Bolton is predominantly a residential area of Bolton, Greater Manchester. It gives its name to an electoral ward of the wider metropolitan borough of Bolton. Derived from the old English smebe for smooth and hyll for a hill, the area was first recorded as Smythell as far back as 1322.
