Chapeltown, Bolton

A wonderful village, in part a conservation area set on the edge of the West Pennine Moors (often usurped by & known as Turton which is the district rather than the village itself) made up of picture postcard stone cottages and the development spread of some more modern high end detached houses.  Cardwells Letting Agents have been successfully letting properties in Chapeltown since 1982.

The village is dominated by St Annes Church (known locally as the cathedral on the hill). A beautiful stone building dedicated to St Anne the mother of the Virgin Mary. The chapel of Turton existed since 1111, built by Roger De Poitu.

In 1630 Lord Chetham purchased the manor of Turton and rebuilt the chapel. In 1799 it was rebuilt yet again and the present church was built between 1840 & 1841.

The Chetham Arms is the one remaining public house in Chapeltown, located on High Street offering good pub grub and fine traditional beers, a dog friendly place where all are welcome. Opposite is Tower Street, this leads down to two football pitches including the second oldest football pitch in England dating back to the late 1830’s where local history records show that five of the England Football Team lived on High Street, and used the Chetham Arms to get changed.

Turton Tower is very close by, a wonderful historic medieval country house set in private grounds located off Chapeltown Road. The house is open to the public at a nominal cost as well as the tower kitchen, the grounds are open all year round and free of charge to explore.

Chapeltown used to have its own railway station but this is now closed, the old mill was knocked down and upmarket designer homes were built on site. Locals must now travel about a mile to Bromley Cross or Entwistle railway stations.
