Trace the route from the entrance to the kitchen, bathroom and outside space. Notice rooms reached through other rooms, narrow circulation areas and where furniture could sit. Treat measurements as a starting point and verify anything critical in person.
Test the layout with a normal day
Imagine the busiest part of your household's day and follow the movement between rooms. Include storage, doors opening and more than one person using the space. A room can be large enough on paper but awkward for a particular furniture arrangement. Sketch the pieces you need and check important dimensions. Keep changes to the building separate from changes to furniture, because a proposed alteration may require costs, permissions and specialist advice that a viewing cannot resolve.
