The number one tip is to be organised and plan things in advance! Organisation is key when it comes to moving home, and you can never have enough lists, as long as you actually use them! You can create lists of the vital items in each room, then as you pack them up you can tick them off. So you can have that relief of knowing that you have packed the main things from each room. Also, create lists and priority actions that need to be completed at certain stages of the move. It would also help to create a timeline so that you know what needs to be done and by when.
Some people think they’re being super organised packing away all the essentials first, making sure that they don’t forget anything like phone chargers, bedding, toiletries etc.. However, this becomes a problem when you come to unpacking, and all those daily essentials are lost somewhere in the sea of boxes. So why not make up an essentials box that is kept somewhere separate such as the car or taken to your new property first. This essentials box needs to contain everything you might need for your first night/first day at your new property. Which includes; kettle, tea, coffee, toothbrushes/paste, towels and bedding.
Moving House is the perfect excuse to have a good clean out of everything that’s accumulated over the years. Going through all your possessions and having to pack it all up allows you to rethink whether you need everything you currently own. And a lot of the time, the answer tends to be no you don’t need it. This is a good time to set up a charity bag and a rubbish bag! Don’t hold back, if you don’t need it then get rid, don’t keep things just to clutter up your nice new home.
And finally, make sure you’ve notified all the relevant people about your change of address. That includes friends, relatives, schools, work, utility companies etc.. the last thing you want is to be happily settled in to find out that all your post is still being sent to your old address.
